Pasadena, CA - The Citrus College Baseball team completed their season sweep of Pasadena City College on Wednesday. The Owls used an eight run spurt between the fifth and seventh innings to secure an 11-9 win over the Lancers.
Citrus got off on the right foot, scoring twice in the top of the first thanks to a 2-RBI double to left-center off the bat of freshman Andre Flores. Unfortunately, Pasadena had a quick answer with three in the bottom of the first. The Owls would tie the game up in the top of the second, via an RBI double from sophomore Jordan Achay, but the Lancers had an answer again in the bottom of the third to surge back in front 4-3.
The Owls would put any runs on the board until the top of the fifth. Freshman Benjamin Aguilera roped a ground-rule double to left, and Flores hit another RBI double down the left field line to make it 5-4. In the sixth, sophomore Kyosuke Ushimaru would score on a passed ball, freshman Donovyn Curiel with hit an RBI single to center field and then would score a few at bats later thanks to a wild pitch. Aguilera would make it 9-3 with an RBI single to left. In the top of the seventh, Citrus added some insurance after an RBI groundout by sophomore Garret Barnes, and an RBI double to right field by Curiel that made it 11-4.
As it would turn out, Citrus would need every bit of that eight run spurt, as Pasadena would score four in the seventh and one more in the eighth, before freshman Peter Eitapence could slam the door shut in the ninth, earning his second save of the year.
At the plate, Flores, Curiel, and Aguilera all went 2-for-5. Achay finished 4-for-5. Sophomore Roberto Baldanebro (4-2) would get the win, pitching five innings, giving up four earned runs and striking out six batters.
With the win, Citrus improves to 18-13-2 on the year. The Owls will be back in action on Thursday when they host Mt. San Antonio College for their final non-conference game of the 2017 regular season. First pitch is set for 2:30 PM.
