Back on Track With a Side of Revenge
Glendora, CA (Women's Basketball) -- After suffering three straight losses, the Citrus College Women's Basketball team got back on track on Wednesday and got a side of revenge in the process. The Owls avenged an earlier loss to West LA College with a 71-57 win over the Wildcats.
West LA would score the games first basket, but Citrus quickly took over the lead and never relinquished it back. After the Wildcats went up 1-0, the Owls responded with a 10-2 run that was capped off by a jumper from sophomore Yvonne Sanchez that put Citrus up seven with just over thirteen minutes to go in the half.
The Owls would push their lead to 10 points twice midway through the first half, but each time, West LA was able to work it back down to single digits. The Wildcats would cut the Owls' lead to six points with 2:35 left in the half, but Citrus scored six straight to close out the first frame thanks to jumpers from sophomore Julia Tani and a pair from sophomore Brianna Barfield (all in the paint) that gave Citrus a 30-18 lead headed into the break.
In the second half, Citrus continued to keep their lead in double digits with it only dipping below 10 points once around the 16:16 mark. The Owls' lead would hit a high of 16 points with 13:05 left after freshman Gabriella Rodgers hit an eight foot jumper on a fast-break that made it 44-28 with 13:05 to go.
The closest the Wildcats would get late would be when they cut it to 10 with 6:30 left. The Owls promptly scored the next seven points, five from Kenya Thomas free-throws and two more from a pair of Barfield free-throws that put Citrus up 60-43 with 3:17 to go. From that point forward the win was never a doubt.
In the win, Citrus was led by Barfield who scored a team high 13 points and grabbed a team high seven rebounds. Thomas added 12 points, all from the charity stripe, and six boards, while sophomore Jasmine Cox filled up the stat sheet in limited action with nine points, four rebounds (all offensive), an assist, two blocks, and three steals.
With the win, the Owls improve to 5-21 overall and 5-6 in WSC South play. Citrus will close out their 2011-2012 season on Saturday when they take on host Santa Monica College. Tip-off is set for 5:00 PM.
