Bio

Andrew Silva continues as Head Coach for the Women’s Water Polo and Women’s Swimming programs, having taken over both teams in 2013.  He also serves as the Citrus College Aquatics Coordinator, which involves managing the Citrus College Aquatics Center. In the fall of 2012, Silva became a full-time faculty member of the Citrus College Kinesiology Department.

Aside from his duties as Citrus, Silva also works for USA Water Polo as a Regional Goalkeeper Coach in the Olympic Development Program and Assistant Coach for the Women’s National Teams. During the summer of 2014 he served as an Assistant Coach for the United States Youth Women’s National Team which won a gold medal at the UANA Junior Pan American Championship.  Silva was presented the Doc Hunkler Distinguished Coaching Award by the Coastal California Zone of USA Water Polo for his work during 2014.  He recently served as Head Coach of the Rose Bowl Water Polo Club 16 & Under Girl’s team which finished 4th at the 2014 Junior Olympics.

Prior to Citrus, Silva spent the previous five years as an assistant for the very successful aquatics programs at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo. In his time with the Cougars, Silva helped lead the Cuesta Men’s Swim team to four second place finishes in the Western State Conference (WSC) in five seasons, and the Women’s Swim team to three second place WSC finishes in that same span. During the 2007, 2008, and 2012 seasons, the men’s squad finished in the Top 15 in the entire State, including a ninth place finish in this year’s California Community College Athletics Association (CCCAA) State Championships. The women garnered the same Top 15 in State honors in 2008, 2010, and 2012.  The Cuesta Men’s Water Polo team also enjoyed success during Silva’s stay, including three WSC titles and a berth in the 2007 State Championships.

Before going to Cuesta, Silva spent three years as the Head Women’s Water Polo Coach at NCAA Division I Marist College. In 2006, Silva was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Coach of the Year and guided the Red Foxes to the NCAA Women’s Water Polo Championships that same season. In 2007, Silva’s squad at Marist set the program record for wins in a season and went 10-0 in MAAC play.

Along with his collegiate experience Silva also has spent time coaching water polo and swimming at the high school level. Silva served as the Head Coach of the Boy’s and Girl’s Water Polo programs at San Luis Obispo High School from 1999-2002, including a league title for the girl’s team in 2002. As an assistant coach with the boy’s swimming program during that time the Tigers won consecutive Northern League titles and finished second at the 2002 CIFSS Division III Finals.

Silva’s teaching resume is just as impressive as his coaching resume. He has served as a full-time faculty member of the Kinesiology Department at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and as an adjunct faculty member at Cuesta College. Silva earned his B.A. from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in 2002 and his M.S. also from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in 2010.
