Sharp Shooters
Glendora, CA — The Citrus College Men's Basketball program matched a season high by hitting 11 threes on Saturday afternoon when they hosted Santa Monica College in WSC South action. The sharp shooting by the Owls helped Citrus get past a talented Corsairs squad 75-64.
Oddly enough it was Santa Monica who came out firing opening the scoring with a three pointer in their second possession of the night. It was the first of only two three's they would hit all night. Citrus meanwhile went to work, and quickly turned a 3-0 deficit into a 7-3 lead after a lay-in from freshman Ryan Wiley, a three from sophomore John Roach, and a pair of free-throws from sophomore Jordan Jefferson.
Santa Monica would keep it close, but the Owls would never trail again. The Corsairs would even tie the game up at 27-27 with 7:10 left in the first half, but Citrus got a three from freshman Jordan McNellys, a tip-in from sophomore Dominique Walker, another three pointer from McNellys, and a lay-up from Roach to go back up 10. The Corsairs would make another charge pulling to within three with 54 seconds to go, but a pair of free-throws from Walker with three seconds left gave Citrus a five point lead at the break.
In the second half, Citrus stayed in the drivers seat. Santa Monica got to within two, twice within the first nearly nine minutes of action, but the Owls got another big three from McNellys, a Wiley tip-in, and then a three-point play by McNellys to put Citrus back up comfortably by 10. From that point forward, Citrus' lead never fell below eight.
McNellys would lead all scorers with 17 points off the bench, hitting four of his six attempts from three. Roach would add 15, with freshman Tyler LaCour chipping in with 13, and Wiley 11. With the win, Citrus improves to 13-7 overall and 6-2 in WSC South action. The Owls will be at Glendale College on Wednesday for a 5:00 PM tip.
