Glendale College walked onto the Citrus Stadium pitch this afternoon with one thing on its mind, maintaining its undefeated conference record. But the Citrus men had the same goal in mind, and would immediately assert themselves on the Glendale defense with a score by Joel Rosales in the 5th minute. Rosales was assisted by Sergio Gonzalez. From that point forward, the Owls controlled the tempo throughout the first half, unleashing a bombing campaign on the Glendale goal with 11 shots in total. Gonzalez attacked relentelssly, blasting 7 shots at the stunend Glendale defense, missing narrowly on several of those attempts.
The second goal of the half came on a flawlessly executed corner kick by Gutierrez that Noel Rosales would soar above the crowd for and head into the back of the net. The Owls reacted by applying even more pressure on the Gauchos, winning ball after ball and keeping the Glendale players on their heels. Goal number three came in the 40th minute when Gutierrez set up Joel Rosales for his second goal of the day, deflating the confidence of the Gauchos and sending them into halftime rattled.
But Glendale would recover at halftime and came into the second half with a renewed sense of purpose. The momentum seemed to shift towards the Gauchos as they worked into their offense, sending several long balls downfield and making some great runs, but Citrus would make stop after stop. Citrus would allow one goal in the game, on a direct kick from 20 yards out that would sneak past the outstretched arms of goalie Jorge Quinones into the upper V. Citrus closed out the game with solid team play and ball movement, preserving its lead and cementing the win to stay undefeated in divisional conference play.
Citrus takes the field again Friday at home vs Victor Valley in a battle of top teams in the Western State Conference. Kickoff is at 12:30 PM.
