Valley Glen, CA - The Citrus College Softball team hit split city on Tuesday afternoon in their WSC Blue Division double-header at LA Valley College. The Owls ran away with game one 7-1, but came up short in the second game despite late chances in an 8-7 10-inning loss.
In the first game of the double-header Citrus played well, racking up 11 hits and committing just one error. The Owls scored a pair in the first and the rest in the third to cruise to a 7-1 victory. Sophomore Haley Gomez was 2 for 3, scoring two runs and two RBIs. Sophomore Autumn Bartholomy went 2 for 5 with a run and three RBIs. Sophomore Makaele Moore picked up the win, giving up just five hits, one walk, and one run in the complete game victory.
In the second game, Citrus again scored a run in the top of the first to jump out to a 1-0 lead, where it would stay over the next five innings. In the top of the sixth, Citrus added an insurance run, that they ended up needing as the Monarchs tied the game up in the bottom half of the inning.
The two teams would keep each other off the scoreboard in the seventh and eighth innings, until Citrus' seemingly exploded for three scores in the top of the ninth. LA Valley wasn't going to go away without a fight though as they matched the three runs in the bottom half to force a tenth inning. Again in the 10th, Citrus plated runs, scoring twice to jump back in front 7-5. The jubilation was short lived though, as the Monarchs came back with three in the bottom of the 10th, to prevent the Owls sweep.
In the second game loss, Citrus was paced by Gomez who went 2 for 6 with a pair of runs and a pair of RBIs. Freshman Celine Spathias was 3 for 6 with two RBIs.
The Owls will be back out on the road in conference play Thursday when they take on LA Mission College.
