Citrus College Softball hosted Orange Coast College for a doubleheader today and although they lost both games, the Owls proved they could compete against the No.13 in-state ranked Pirates.
OCC defeated the Owls 8-7 in game one and 11-7 in game two of this evening's doubleheader.
The Owls move to 2-4 on the season, while Orange Coast College begins their season 2-0.
Citrus College got the scoring started in game one when Madelyn Hajj sent a solo homerun over the right field fence in the bottom of the first inning. OCC responded with a five-run second inning and added another run in the top of the third inning to go up 6-1. The Owls scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning off a sacrifice fly from Ava Camarena that drove in Harmony Torres and Alivia Martinez, making the score 6-3.
Jaelynn Eaves crushed a solo homerun in the bottom of the 4th inning to get the Owls within two runs at 6-4.
The Pirates scored one run in the top of the fifth inning going up 7-4 and the Owls responded by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning thanks to a Rylee Praytor double that scored Hajj and Sofia Femath. Jaelynn Eaves tied the game at 7-7 with an RBI single that scored Kaliah Lopez.
Orange Coast drove in the game-winning run in the top of the sixth inning to go up 8-7 as the Owls did not capitalize in the bottom of the seventh inning after loading the bases with no outs. Ava Camarena, Rylee Praytor and Jaelynn Eaves all recorded two RBIs while Madelyn Haaj went 2-for-2 with one homerun, two runs scored and one RBI.
In game two the Pirates scored seven runs in the top of the first inning and added one run in the second inning. The Owls kept the game interesting by scoring six runs through four innings to make the score 8-6. With the final score being 11-7 the Owls showed that they could compete with a top team by recording 10 hits and no fielding errors.
Alivia Martinez led the Owls going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Sofia Femath, Rylee Praytor, Eliana Lopez, and Bailey Aguilar all recorded one RBI.
